Effective Study Techniques for University Students
One of the most stressful parts of university is dealing with the workload - whether that’s coursework deadlines or exams. It can be hard to find effective ways to get your work done when there are so many distractions at university. That’s why we’ve come up with a list of study tips for students!
Set yourself a study schedule
You might not be a timetable person but one of the most useful study tips for students is to organise your time effectively. This will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed by all the work. You don’t have to make an extremely strict schedule but you should know what you are going to focus on for each day. It can be a good idea to focus on different things in the mornings and afternoons, too, so that you don’t get bored.
Talk things through with fellow students
Your friends and coursemates will be going through the same stress as you so it’s a good idea to talk things through with them. Having group discussions and sharing ideas and study tips can be really beneficial for productivity and inspiration in your own work. But remember - there’s a fine line between collaborating in a positive way and verging on the edge of plagiarism.
Try the Pomodoro Technique
If you haven’t heard of the Pomodoro Technique before, it’s definitely something that’s worth looking into. It involves dividing your day of study into small sections of 30 minutes. In each half hour period, you work for 25 minutes and break for 5 minutes. After four of these periods, you can then take a 15-20 minute break. The idea is that you focus on one specific task in those short periods, and don’t get distracted by anything else on your to-do list.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
It may not seem like a study tip in itself, but you should always feel able to ask your tutor or lecturer for guidance on a particular assignment. A large part of their job is to help you, so you should make sure to use their knowledge to your advantage.
Look after yourself
And lastly, it’s so important that you look after yourself while you are studying! Eating well, drinking enough water and getting enough sleep are all routes to success. There is no point pulling an all-nighter if you’re only working with half of your brain power. Remember to take breaks, go for walks, and keep healthy - it’s all important for your wellbeing and will help you study more effectively.
